HPP’s Candidate Endorsements for 2022

Howard Progressive Project is thrilled to announce its endorsements for the 2022 Maryland gubernatorial primary election! We received applications from a number of candidates, and after careful consideration in accordance with our values and priorities, we have chosen to endorse Howard County Council District 4 candidate Janssen Evelyn and Howard County At-Large Board of Education candidates Jacky McCoy and Dan Newberger. HPP believes that their impeccable qualifications, community-focused values, and lived experiences engender inclusive leadership that will move Howard County forward. We can’t wait to see them leading our most important government institutions!

Janssen Evelyn is a proud father of two HCPSS students, an experienced Howard County government public servant, and a passionate environmental activist. Because he grew up in an immigrant family that struggled to find adequate and affordable housing, economic stability, and excellent education, Janssen understands the barriers faced by our most vulnerable District 4 residents. It’s this understanding that drives Janssen’s fresh vision for Howard County – a vision that will promote smart growth while preserving our green spaces and keep our promises to our children by investing in our schools. Janssen Evelyn’s experience and voice make him the right choice for District 4.

Jacky McCoy is laser-focused on where and how our system is failing to meet the needs of our most vulnerable students. As an experienced teacher and community educator, Jacky knows what it takes to address the inequities our system perpetuates. Her plans to both maximize the impact of the increased funding our schools will receive under the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future while re-engaging parents and communities in the work of our educational system underscores her core belief – that every single child deserves the very best our system has to offer.

Dan Newberger is a passionate advocate for progress in our community. Throughout his career as a Navy officer, a non-profit executive, and a community organizer, Dan’s intellect, work ethic, and integrity have made his teams stronger. Today, our schools face unprecedented challenges – pandemic recovery, teacher and staff shortages, extraordinary student mental health needs, and unacceptable gaps in opportunity and achievement.  As a leader with a host of experiences bringing diverse groups of people together to solve difficult problems, Dan is uniquely qualified to help HCPSS continue its important work toward building schools that serve every child in every neighborhood.
